What Parents are Saying

Our son, now in grade 7, completed the two-year Write on Q program in grades 4 and 5. Years later, he continues to benefit from the skills he learned in this program and its uniquely developed curriculum taught by passionate teachers. By nature, our son is quiet and shy and does not like to draw attention to himself. He is also a “reluctant writer”. However, after participating in Write on Q we have noticed considerable improvement in his ability to write and deliver oral presentations. For example, last year he surprised himself (and his parents) when he moved on to be a finalist in his Middle School speech contest. While admittedly, he still does not “enjoy” written assignments or speaking in front of a group, our son credits the skills he learned in Write on Q to help him write and speak more confidently. Thank you Write on Q! We will soon be enrolling his younger sister.

As a public school teacher, I understand the challenges of teaching a classroom of diverse learners writing skills beyond that of the “hamburger paragraph”. There are gaps in education where students do not learn the basic structures of writing. The result is students find writing a painful process, with poor outcomes and a stunted development of expression. Write on Q fixes this! Among other things, the program involves both the writing and editing processes and students receive meaningful FEEDBACK that guides their learning. Understanding the structure of how to write gives students the ability to develop their own style and voice, facilitates critical thinking but more importantly allows students to express themselves with accuracy and precision.

(mother of Sofia and Serena, Write on Q grades 4-7, 3-6)

Write on Q has helped me in so many ways! For me, just bringing my writing folder to school to create full essays, it has made a big impact on my writing knowledge. Every class I learn something new; each time something different and interesting. The homework is very constructive as well, every lesson is building on the previous one… expanding my knowledge. Write on Q has several components such as vocabulary, essay and/or paragraph writing, and public speaking. Each of the elements has developed my writing skills and presentation skills.

In addition, it not only sets me up for everyday life but for the future too. The teachers are so helpful and they help me understand everything. Every single teacher is unique and experienced, but they all work together to ensure everything is understood; and that you’re progressing greatly.

Emma Tutoveanu

(Student, Write on Q grades 4, 5 and 6)

Write on Q is a great language program and I would highly recommend it to any parent who sets high expectations for their children. The director of the program, Fatima Ramji, is absolutely amazing. She is extremely organized and meticulous and she always finds the time in her busy schedule to talk to parents and answer every question they might have.

The curriculum is very well structured and you have a clear understanding of what your child will learn that year. Our son finished the 2 years program and he is now in the third year. His writing skills improved tremendously and his vocabulary expanded considerably. He had Ms. Farrally in the first year and Ms. Halkowicz in the 2nd and 3rd year. Both of them are excellent teachers!!!! They are very experienced and knowledgeable, patient and supportive and they both keep the lessons engaging and interesting. The teacher-parent communication is excellent. Being able to talk to the teachers helped me understand way better how my son is progressing.

Overall, a great program, very well structured, outstanding teachers, would highly recommend!

Write On Q is one of the best language programs out there. It has helped my daughter progress greatly. With the help of Write On Q my daughter is one of the 150 children in Peel that made the IBT program. This is partly because of the great team and awesome curriculum of Write on Q. We recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more, expand their language skills, public speaking.

Write on Q is an excellent program. My daughter (currently in Grade 6) has completed two years of the program and it has helped with her writing and her public speaking skills. She excels in Language Arts at school and this program has helped her do that. She is more confident in preparing and organizing her written output and identifying the most important information she wants to relay, whether verbally or through expressive writing. I highly recommend this program.

Effective communication, writing, and presentation skills are the most important in today’s rigorous and competitive academic environment. Write on Q motivates every student to work towards achieving and accomplishing these skills. The curriculum is engaging and covers effective writing, critical thinking, builds comprehension vocabulary, public speaking, and collaboration. My son was privileged to be in Ms. H’s class, she is an amazing teacher and mentor. She creates a challenging and nurturing environment for students to succeed, always loved her concise feedback on every assignment!

Words can’t express how much you helped our son David to improve his English! Last year, he won to go to Nationals for a science fair. He told me when I asked him what do you think helped you? He said, mom the fact that I went to Write on Q, helped me a lot. I learned the best Public Speaking strategies for me! At school, he went from a B student in English to an A student! As a parent, I saw a big progress from the beginning until the end of the program! Thanks, Fatima so much, will continue to recommend your program to everyone!

My daughter attended Write on Q during Grade 7 and 8, and I am overly pleased with the results. The students learn how to read to comprehend and synthesize, improve their vocabulary, write essays, read poetry aloud, and present with confidence. They learn about many small subject matters which adds flavor to the learning modules. I can state that it is a great program because my daughter won the English award at her Grade 8 Graduation.

Now in Grade 9, my daughter is confident in writing reports, essays and doing her homework. Her ideas are focused and she knows how to structure her arguments effectively. She may have wondered why I enrolled her in the beginning, but by the second year, she was thanking me for enrolling her because she realizes how much it helps her with her day-school curriculum. As a parent, you just want to find the right tools to equip your child in today’s fast-paced world. Thank you, Fatima! and the team at Write on Q!

Dianna Dinevski, MBA

(mother of Elena, Write on Q grades 7 and 8)

Write on Q has helped my son understand that writing is a process and it takes time to get good at it. It gave him confidence and needed support to make progress with his writing.

This program has a supportive learning environment where students feel valued, challenged and safe to share and learn from their mistakes. Teachers do not assume students know how to write a thesis, or how to create an outline, or how to structure a body paragraph, the model, scaffold and provide their students with clear examples. During class, a teacher also provides my son with clear criteria to make sure he knows exactly what successful learning looks like. She gives lots of specific and timely constructive feedback in relation to criteria that is focused on improvement and learning.

In this program, my son learned to recognize the traits of good writing, such as clear organization and effective word choice. Over the last two years, he learned how to create a GIST, gather relevant information for his essays, create and edit his drafts, add “dress-ups” and strong verbs. In addition, in this program, my son learned how to self-assess his work against criteria and how to give criteria referenced feedback to his peers. I believe this is a very important skill as he needs to know how to set his own goals and identify next steps in learning.

Mary Peterson, Teacher

Mother of Alex, Write on Q grades 3,4

Our daughter started the Write on Q program two years ago, as an ESL student. Being a passionate reader and writer, she thrived in this program and immensely improved her vocabulary and writing skills. Her teachers at school were amazed by her fast progress and now she shares her knowledge with her peers.

This extra-curricular activity is never considered a burden. She looks forward to coming to class and uses the skills taught here in her everyday life. Her presentation skills have improved, she is more confident when speaking in public and in 2020 she plans to publish the book she has already started writing. She now uses the persuasive essay techniques even for trivial matters, like more time on the computer; so we can say that Write on Q has truly touched the whole family’s life.

The amazing teachers (Ms. Cardozo, Ms. Tomines, and Ms. Halkowicz) that she met in this program have helped her choose her future career. She is now preparing to become a Language Arts /Social Studies Teacher and has found a role model in her current Write on Q teacher, Ms. H. They say “When the Student is ready, the Master appears”. I had the privilege to witness such an extraordinary encounter when she met her current C2 teacher.

The feedback she gets in this program is invaluable and surpasses writing. It helps her sand off the rough edges and promotes kindness towards peers and a good attitude in front of an audience. We believe this program will really help her with her college applications, too.

We are looking forward to her D2 year in the program, starting next September and we plan to give the same opportunities to our youngest daughter when she reaches the appropriate age.

(mother of Irina, Write on Q grades 6-8)

“I started to Write on Q in Grade 7 and finished at the end of Grade 8.
I can state that it is a great program, because I was the only one who won the English award at my school for the entire grade (150 students) based on my research, writing and presentation skills. Thanks, Write on Q!
At first, I wasn’t sure why my mom enrolled me in this program, but I soon realized that we were learning how to read, synthesize, improve our vocabulary, write an essay, present in front of my peers, learn poetry and classical literature. I was impressed, and although I did find it challenging at times, I was pleased with myself that I was accomplishing so much.
More importantly, we were learning to write effectively and practice our presentation skills, and I saw that we were not learning this enough in school, so I became very proficient at writing and presenting.
Now in Grade 9, I get great marks in English. I am confident when it comes to doing research, writing, and presenting in class. Some of my classmates are very nervous because they are not prepared, and stress every time there is a paper or report to write. I look to help them because this is not a good feeling to have and now realize that my mom was right by enrolling me. I am also thankful for having attended WOQ for two years.”

Dianna Dinevski, MBA

former Write on Q student, grades 7-8

“ I have only great things to say about my experience in Write on Q. My daughter attended a few years ago, and I was very impressed with her progress in writing. She is my favourite writer, and I love her expression and communication through her writing. After 4 years, my son also joined WOQ. He started liking to write after that.

I like the program’s format and curriculum. They focus on writing and public speaking. Ms. Sarah Galdenzi taught both of my kids.  She is amazing and offers great encouragement. Both my kids love her. If you have any doubts, you can reach out anytime to Fatima. She is very passionate about students’ success. She emphasizes the class work, homework, and the review process to make this program helpful for the students.

This is a great program to improve writing skills!“
