What is Write on Q?

Write on Q is an after-school English program that offers writing courses and public speaking coaching for students in grades three through to ten. While most students are in the grade four to nine range, exceptions can be made depending on skill level.

How do the English Writing courses work?

Class sizes are small, to allow for a lot of teacher-student interaction. There are two teachers in each classroom to help ensure each student gets the attention and guidance they need to improve their writing skills.

Each course includes 1.5 hours of in-class instruction per week, during the regular school year. On top of in-class lessons, students will also be given weekly homework assignments in writing, vocabulary, and public speaking.

Writing is a major focus, but attention will also be given to reading and speaking. This balance helps develop well-rounded and effective communication skills.

Essay Writing

One of the focal points of the writing courses at Write on Q is essay writing. Essay writing is a very important skill to develop in your early years of writing because it helps develop good writing habits.

To write an effective essay, you first need a position to argue or a subject to inform about. Then to make your writing compelling, the key is good planning and organization.

Types of Essays

Several methods of essay writing will be explored in the writing courses at Write on Q. Some examples are:

Persuasive Essay

A persuasive essay is where the writer attempts to convince or persuade the reader that his or her point of view is the most credible. It is also known as an argumentative essay, trying to get the reader to see your side of the argument.

This is accomplished by gathering relevant supporting information, and organizing it in a convincing and compelling way.

Expository Essay

The purpose of an expository essay is to explain a particular topic or subject. An expository essay is typically presented in a straight-forward manner, providing an impartial analysis of the topic based on research and collected facts.

An expository essay is great for developing critical thinking and organizational skills.

Compare and Contrast Essay

Also known as a comparative essay, this type of writing involves comparing two particular items or subjects.

While it is important to illustrate the similarities and differences between the two subjects, it is not the main goal of a comparative essay. The main purpose of a comparative essay is to develop relevant and significant arguments about each side, and then determine how the two relate.

Timed S.S.A.T. Essay

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) essay is a timed essay that is part of a larger test for measuring language, math, and writing skills to determine admissions for Ontario private schools.

There are three levels of difficulty based on grade:

Elementary level – grades 3&4
Middle level – grades 5-7
Upper level – grades 8-11
